If I'm not mistaken, the black legs are the signature of the snowy egret. Iceogismsf ya wanna see a bunch of them, go to the Wild Animal Park in Escondido. They hang out down the hill by the cheeths. If you stand still, you'll be covered with egret poop in minutes.
The Snowy Egret has a black bill and black legs and is a mid-sided bird, about 2 feet tall. I think the bird you saw was a Great Egret (also called the Great White Egret or White Egret) which has black legs, a yellow bill, and can be three or more feet tall. I hope that this helps.
I enjoy lurking around your blog from time to time, I'm an old-time fiddler and banjo player in WV who likes to monkey with the uke from time-to-time.
For those of you out-of-towners, the lake at which these birds congregate is a man-made lake. Around the winter time, a variety of birds stop by on the migratory route. I have biked around there and seen a variety of predatory birds from eagles to kites and everything in between.

That should say "If you wanna see a bunch of them, go to the Wild Animal Park in Escondido. They hang out down the hill by the cheetahs."

This was definitely larger than two feet. Thanks for lurking.

There was one of these birds in the parking lot of a restaurant near our house a couple of weeks ago.
